Specialty coffee in Indre By

Indre By, the old centre, has the densest cluster of strong bars. April's store on Pilestræde, La Cabra on Møntergade and Nude Coffee on Store Kongensgade are a few minutes apart, Democratic Coffee sits in the Main Library on Krystalgade, and Coffee Collective pours at Torvehallerne and on Kristen Bernikows Gade. Walk it in a morning, from Nørreport toward Kongens Nytorv.

    Coffee Collective Jægersborggade

    Nørrebro+6 locationsMust-try

Coffee Collective opened its first shop on Jægersborggade in 2008, and this small Nørrebro room is still the place to start. It roasts everything itself, buys directly from farmers and publishes what it paid for each coffee. Expect light, clean roasts with fruit and floral notes, and ask what is on filter today. The roastery runs coffee and roasting courses, and during World of Coffee 2024 it held meet-the-producer cuppings. Six more bars are spread across the city, including one in the Torvehallerne market and one in a former bodega on Kristen Bernikows Gade.

    April Coffee Store & Showroom

    Indre By+1 locationMust-try

April was founded in Copenhagen in 2016 by Swedish roaster Patrik Rolf, a 2022 World Barista Championship finalist, and the Pilestræde store is its home in the city centre. It buys from partner farmers, one farm per coffee, and roasts in a clean Nordic style. The menu follows the harvests, with rare and limited lots next to the daily selection, and there is a tasting menu if you want to compare. The bright, quiet room with Finn Juhl furniture feels closer to a showroom than a café. Next door at number 37, its SP Coffee Shop serves sweeter, more developed roasts from the same farmers.

    La Cabra

    Indre By+1 locationMust-try

La Cabra started out in Aarhus and now roasts in Copenhagen, at a roastery in Nordhavn. In the centre, the Møntergade café sits inside the Another Aspect clothing store in the fashion district: a calm, clean Nordic room. The roasting is light and keeps sweetness and clarity in front, with single-origin lots from places such as Sidama in Ethiopia and Huila in Colombia. The team bakes its own naturally leavened bread and pastries. Out in Nordhavn, the roastery café has a brick bar that looks through the quality-control room toward production.

    Nude Coffee

    Indre ByMust-try

Nude Coffee is a small bar on Store Kongensgade built around the brewing counter, with most seats close to the barista. It does not roast; it is a tightly curated multi-roaster, and on the Nordic Style Coffee Guide's visit the shelf held rare coffees from Special Guests, Standout and La Cabra. Water is filtered and mineralised for brewing, and the filter coffee is the reason to come. Talk to Joachim behind the bar about what is open. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 to 17.

    ROAST Coffee

    Islands Brygge+2 locationsMust-try

ROAST opened in 2015 near Islands Brygge, just across the Langebro bridge from the centre, and roasts on site at Vestmannagade. The menu runs to more than eight coffees, from light to dark, and any of them can be brewed as a pour-over. Many lots are bought through the Cup of Excellence programme and carry a 50-50 label, which guarantees the farmers half of the retail price after tax. The roastery also runs public coffee courses. Its other bars are on Studiestræde in the centre, at Vesterport Station and at a second roastery in Sydhavn.

    Democratic Coffee

    Indre ByMust-try

Democratic Coffee has run its bar inside Copenhagen's Main Library on Krystalgade since 2011. It roasts its own coffee, and Sprudge called it one of the city's best cups; its almond croissant has a following of its own. Seats at the bar are few, but the library around it has more than twenty, and it is a calm place to sit with a cup and a book in the middle of the old town.

    Andersen & Maillard

    Nørrebro+1 locationGood

Andersen & Maillard opened on Nørrebrogade in 2018 as a coffee shop and roastery, and it roasts in house. Its coffees name the producer and the process, such as a washed Pacamara from Sigfredo Corado's Los Angeles farm. When the Anders Husa guide visited, the bar poured a natural and a washed Ethiopian from the same farm side by side as pour-overs. It is just as known for its pastries, so expect a queue for croissants. A second coffee shop with its own bakery is on Ny Østergade in the centre.

    H A N S Coffee

    Indre ByGood

HANS Coffee is a small bar on Boldhusgade, off the main streets near Christiansborg Palace and the museums. It was called CUB Coffee Bar until Hans Kristian Andersen took it over and renamed it. When Sprudge visited, the espresso was a Brazilian Campo das Vertentes and the filter rotated between Ethiopian and Kenyan lots, with breakfast and pastries made in house. Klaus Thomsen of Coffee Collective included it in his 2024 Copenhagen picks.

    Orsa Coffee Landemærket

    Indre By+1 locationGood

Orsa was started by two baristas and has two bars, on Landemærket near Nørreport and on Vesterbrogade in Vesterbro. Its line is where coffee and music meet: it publishes its own playlists, and the music is part of the visit. It began as a multi-roaster bar and now sells freshly roasted coffee and brewing gear online. Klaus Thomsen of Coffee Collective listed it among the city's newest places in his 2024 guide for Sprudge.

    Komuna Coffee SILENT CLUB

    Indre ByGood

Komuna is a Mexican specialty coffee company that buys green coffee in Mexico and roasts it in Copenhagen, with each coffee linked to its producer: lots such as a washed Bellavista or a natural Pocitos fermented for 72 hours. Silent Club, its café on Bredgade, is where to drink them, and Komuna has started running pour-over workshops. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, from 9 to 17.

    20 Grams

    Indre By+1 locationGood

20 Grams opened in 2018 on Rosengården, a quiet street near Nørreport, and is named after the dose in its double shot. Daniel and Claudia Bokor pull it on a restored La Marzocco FB70, usually with single-origin Ethiopian coffee from Impact Roasters. The room is retro and bright, with vintage decor, and the menu leans into brunch, sourdough sandwiches and cakes such as a San Sebastian cheesecake. A second café is on Kampmannsgade near Vesterport.

Bookmark Coffee is a coffee bar inside Politikens Boghal, the bookshop on the City Hall square, opened in 2024 by chef Lasse Askov, a partner in Prolog. The coffee is Prolog's, served as filter or espresso drinks, and the bread, cakes and sandwiches are made in house from organic ingredients. Furniture from +Halle makes it a calm corner on a busy square.

    Social Brew

    Indre By+1 locationGood

Social Brew has two cafés in central Copenhagen, on Kultorvet near Nørreport and on Vester Farimagsgade near Vesterport. It calls itself a specialty coffee shop and café, and Sprudge reported that Social, the café by the lakes at Dronning Louises Bro, pours espresso roasted with Social Brew. Klaus Thomsen of Coffee Collective named it among his Copenhagen picks in 2024. It works best as a relaxed, central place to sit.
