Buenos Aires coffee guide
How to plan a coffee day in Buenos Aires: where the roasters are, which neighbourhoods to base yourself in, what to order and how to take beans home.
Buenos Aires has a long café culture, from the historic cafés of Avenida de Mayo and Corrientes, but its specialty scene is young. Coffee Town opened its counter in the Mercado de San Telmo in 2012, Lattente followed in 2013, and Negro opened on Suipacha Street in 2015 as the first specialty bar in the city centre. Since then a group of cafés has started roasting for itself, among them Tres, Cuervo, LAB Tostadores, The Shelter Coffee, flat&white and Manifiesto, and the national edition of The Best Coffee Shops ranking now lists dozens of shops in the city.
Argentina does not grow coffee, so every bean is imported. Menus name the origin and often the farm and process: Negro and Tres have both used a washed Colombian from Huila, and the filter list usually rotates between Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Ethiopia, Kenya or Rwanda. Ask the barista what is on filter today; V60, Chemex and AeroPress are standard at the stronger bars.
For a first coffee day, base yourself in Palermo. In Palermo Soho, Cuervo, Hobby, Fruto, Full City and Lattente are a short walk apart; cross Avenida Juan B. Justo into Palermo Hollywood for LAB Tostadores, Vive Café and Negro Hollywood. Colegiales and Chacarita, next door, hold Tres, Blanca Studio, Cuervo's roastery café and a branch of The Shelter Coffee. Downtown, Negro's bars on Suipacha and Tucumán, flat&white and Manifiesto make a good morning between Retiro and San Nicolás. Belgrano and Núñez, further north, have their own cluster around Avenida Cabildo and Juramento.
Most specialty cafés open between 8 and 9 in the morning and close around 8 in the evening; few stay open late. Some of the strongest bars keep short hours: LAB Tostadores and Blanca Studio open on weekdays only, and Cuervo closes on Mondays. Weekends bring queues at the popular Palermo cafés, so go early.
To take coffee home, buy from a roaster. Tres, Cuervo, flat&white, Manifiesto and Full City all sell bags of their current lots, usually in 250 g packs, and most will grind for your method if you ask. Check the roast date on the bag and choose the lightest roast you enjoy; a single origin you tasted on filter is the best souvenir.

NEGRO Cueva de café
San Nicolás+4 locationsMust-try
Negro opened on Suipacha Street in 2015 as one of the first specialty coffee bars in the city centre, and this small room is still the flagship. Its coffee comes from its own roastery, Fuego Tostadores, which buys fresh-crop lots after visiting farms in Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. The menu has a filter section: ask the barista which coffees and methods are on today. The team also runs Negro Escuela, a barista school founded in 2016. It opens on weekdays only, from 8 to 16. Negro Hollywood, opened in 2026, adds shelves of books and records for sale and a hand-brew menu for one or two.

Tres
ColegialesMust-try
Tres roasts its coffee a few steps from the bar, behind a glass panel, so you can watch the roaster while you order. It is run by Agustina Román, the 2013 Argentine barista champion, and in 2026 the first edition of The Best Coffee Shops Argentina put it at number one. The room is small and minimalist, a short walk from the Colegiales train station. Espresso and filter both come from the house roasts; recent coverage describes a Colombian coffee with bright citrus notes. Try the espresso tiramisu, and take beans home.

BLANCA Studio
Chacarita+3 locationsMust-try
Blanca Studio is the small coffee room of the Blanca group, built around manual brewing on a Modbar undercounter system. It roasts its own coffee, and the baristas walk you through each one; Sprudge tasted a Pink Bourbon from Pitalito, Colombia, with notes of dark chocolate, papaya and pineapple. It ranked second in The Best Coffee Shops Argentina 2026. There is room for about eight people and records play. Pair a filter with the cardamom roll. Open on weekdays, 9 to 19:30. The group's other cafés, in Palermo, Las Cañitas and Recoleta, are design shops with a coffee bar, better for browsing than for the cup.

Cuervo Café
Chacarita+5 locationsMust-try
Cuervo began as a café run by two musicians and grew into one of the city's roasters, supplying other cafés too. It has roasted its own coffee since 2021, and this Chacarita branch, on the corner of Jorge Newbery and Guevara, is where the roaster sits in view. Besides the house blends, its shop sells small lots such as a Bourbon Sidra and a Wush Wush from the Patio Bonito farm, and the bar brews filter as well as espresso. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 8 to 20. The Belgrano café, in an old house on Juramento, also makes its own ice cream, so order the affogato there.

LAB. Training Center & Coffee Shop
Palermo HollywoodMust-try
LAB is one of the roasters that started specialty coffee in Buenos Aires, and in 2025 it made The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops. Everyone sits at one long bar facing the baristas, so it is easy to ask about the coffees, which LAB roasts itself; its shop names farm lots such as La Marianela and La Catalina from Colombia. The team also makes bean-to-bar chocolate and runs courses for home brewers and professionals. Order a filter, or the coffee kombucha if you want something different.

Vive Café Cafe de especialidad , cafés de campeonatos
Palermo Hollywood+1 locationMust-try
Vive Café specialises in Colombian coffee and says it buys directly from growers. The bags read like a map of the country: a washed lot from the Paeces indigenous cooperative in Inzá, Cauca, a honey-processed yellow Caturra from Planadas, Tolima, and a natural Bourbon Sidra from Finca Las Flores, sold as a competition lot. Each one lists producer or region, altitude, variety and process, and you can take beans home ground for V60, Chemex or AeroPress. The Best Coffee Shops Argentina 2026 ranked Vive fourth in the country.

The Shelter Coffee
Balvanera+3 locationsGood
The Shelter roasts its own coffee at its Uriburu Street café and lists each bean with its origin, variety and process: a natural Bourbon Amarillo from Minas Gerais, a washed coffee from Huila, a Nicaraguan Dipilto. Filters are brewed to order in V60, Chemex, AeroPress or French press. This Balvanera branch is the roastery, the one Sprudge picked out, and you can buy 250 g or 1 kg bags of the same coffees to take home. In summer there are iced drinks and an orange cold brew. It works on a weekday schedule, so plan a morning visit. Time Out calls the Belgrano café, on Virrey Loreto, the crown jewel of the group.

FRUTO CAFÉ
Palermo Soho+1 locationMust-try
Fruto grew out of a trip to London, where the cofounders saved on supermarket food so they could visit the city's specialty coffee shops. Back in Buenos Aires they built the menu around the coffee: a wide choice of origins, made as espresso or by hand on V60, AeroPress, Chemex or French press. When La Nación visited this shop on Jorge Luis Borges, the V60 was the customers' favourite. The Best Coffee Shops Argentina 2026 placed Fruto 11th in the country. Order a filter and ask which origins are on that day.

The group also runs a coffee school with barista courses and tastings, and a bakery that supplies its cafés. It placed 20th in The Best Coffee Shops Argentina 2026. Have an espresso or a flat white, then take a bag of the current single origin home.

This shop is on Avenida Díaz Vélez in Caballito, a residential stretch near Parque Centenario, and there is a second one on Avenida Boedo. The Best Coffee Shops Argentina 2026 placed Traje 49th in the country. Ask which coffee they are roasting now and order it the way the barista suggests.

At this corner of Palermo, a block from Pacífico, the bar pulls espresso and brews V60, Origami and Moccamaster with rotating lots. Among its current coffees is La Celeste, a honey-processed Castillo from Finca Más in Quindío, Colombia. The room has eight tables, a communal table for six, a small patio and two sidewalk tables, with wifi and plugs. Music is part of the place, so it can get loud. Beyond espresso, ristretto, flat white and lattes, it brews filter by hand, an AeroPress for one person or a Chemex for two, and a cold brew that is steeped and then filtered. The menu is short by design, with its own pastries and simple food. The brand has a second shop in Acassuso, outside the city.

Las Heliconias coffee roasters
AlmagroGood
Las Heliconias is a Colombian family business that grows, processes and imports coffee from its own farm, then roasts it in Buenos Aires in small batches. It says each lot comes with its story: who grew it, how it was processed and when it was roasted. Its tasting room at Avenida Belgrano and Yapeyú, in Almagro, opens on weekdays during office hours. Come here to taste a Colombian coffee with a direct line to the farm, and ask about the lot in the cup.
